Tip o’ the day: Avoid redundant adverbs

Writing

He didn’t “wolf his food hungrily.” He wolfed his food.

Adverbs often tell us what we already know.

She ran quickly through the woods.

He crept quietly through the window.

The ship’s horn blasted loudly.

In each of these cases, the adverb could be omitted from the sentence and the meaning would be the same, right?  In fact, the sentence would altogether better.

Use adverbs only when they achieve something unexpected or create an opposite effect.

Bad use:  She smiled happily.

Good use.  She smiled sadly.

Make your editor happy and avoid redundant adverbs.

ABOUT

Doofus Dad blogs and books are written by future Pulitzer Prize winner Mark E. Johnson. Mark writes about any and everything, all from the perspective of a bumbling, beleaguered, slightly inept father of three, not that this would in any way reflect true life.
